I mentioned in my last post about these two platforms, Medium and Substack. Two writing platforms that I think are famous now. And for sure, you already have an idea of the difference between these two.

But in this post I will still going to discuss briefly the difference of them if you are still not familiar or still navigating each platform.

Medium

  • Basically, a publishing platform where anyone can write articles or blogs.

  • Millions of readers and writers are hanging out on this platform, so it’s like they have built-in audience who can read and give comments to your article.

Substack

  • It is an email newsletter platform.

  • You write your article or blog, and they’ll go directly to your subscribers’ inboxes.

  • Millions of writers are here, and some famous people too, like Dan Koe or Justin Welsh.

So, with these two platforms and your writing skills or your love for writing, you can actually earn real money from it.

How to Earn on Medium and Substack?

Medium

  • Creating an account with Medium is free, but if you want to monetise your Medium account, you have to enrol in their Partner Program.

  • With the Partner Program, you can paywall your story or post, and only paying members can read that.

  • Their pay calculation is based on these two:

    • If the paying member reads your post, and

    • Based also on the reading time (minimum of 30 seconds)

Substack

  • With Substack, it’s also free to create your account or upgrade to a paid one.

  • To monetise your newsletter, you can set it up as a paid subscription (they have monthly, annual and the founding plan).

  • If you don’t want to put it into a paid one, you can just offer the “pledge” option.

  • Another way to monetise it is to promote, offer, and sell your courses or any of your digital products to your subscribers.

These two are one of the few platforms that can pay real money to you. With your writing skills, you can monetise your spare time and take advantage of it.

All you have to do is research them properly. Understand their rules and regulations. Know about the minimum payout or fees of each platform, and TAKE ACTION.

  • Start small.
  • Be genuine in your post or content.
  • Avoid plagiarism.
  • Do proper research before writing.
  • Don’t be afraid to share your thoughts and ideas.
